MATES SA 2024 Annual Fundraising Lunch

This year's MATES SA Annual Fundraising Lunch, hosted at the iconic Adelaide Oval, proved to be a resounding success, showing the largest turnout to date. With over 450 attendees, the event served as a testament to the unwavering support for the MATES program and the commendable efforts of volunteers across various industries in raising awareness and reducing the incidence of suicide.

The proceedings commenced with an address by The Hon. Mark Butler, Minister for Health and Aged Care, who outlined the Federal Government’s commitment to mental health support in the 2025 Federal Budget. Minister Butler spoke about the Federal Government's initiatives to extend funding for the MATES program particularly aimed at supporting FIFO and DIDO workers. His insights were particularly valued, given his longstanding involvement with MATES from the start, providing crucial seed funding for its expansion in 2012.

Guest Speaker, The Hon. Chris Picton, Minister for Health and Wellbeing, praised the contributions of MATES in Construction SA and emphasised the collective responsibility in preventing suicide and fostering a culture of support and safety. Minister Picton spoke to the audience about the State Government’s continued support for MATES in Construction and the provision of vital services for those in need.

Highlighting the afternoon was Duncan Chessell's keynote presentation. As a distinguished leader, geologist, and adventurer, Duncan shared narratives of his global exploits, offering valuable leadership insights. With a remarkable track record, including multiple Mount Everest summits, Antarctic expeditions, and leadership roles spanning over two decades, Duncan's speech was truly inspiring.
