The MATES in Construction (Aus) Board
The MATES in Construction (Aus) Board is comprised of industry and research directors with the primary motivation of saving lives in the construction, mining and energy industries.
Brian Seidler Chairman (Non-Executive) - Executive Director, Master Builders Association of NSW. Brian joined the Master Builders Association as a trainee industrial relations officer in the early 1980s. In 1991 he took on the role of MBA/NSW Executive Officer, Industrial Relations and Safety and in 1998 moved to the role of deputy Executive Director. In 2000 he was offered the role of Executive Director, a position which he holds today. Throughout his time with the MBA he has represented the industry and Master Builders on numerous committees and boards, including: Director CBUS Superannuation 1994 – 1999; Director Australian Construction Industry Redundancy Fund (ACIRT) June 1996 - Present; Building Workers Assistance Centre (BWAC); Mates in Construction (suicide prevention program); NSW Building and Construction Industry Long Service Payments Committee; NSW Council for Women, Board Member; Mates in Construction NSW, Board Member; National Labour Consultative Council; NSW Government Construction Industry Advisory Group; TAFE – South Western Sydney Institute Advisory Council; Guest Lecturer, University of NSW, School of the Built Environment. Brian is a Member of the Order of Australia (AM). Colin Emmott Director (Non-Executive) - Colin is a Chartered Accountant and was a Partner of HLB Mann Judd from July 1987 to June 2018 and has been in the profession for over 35 years. He is well regarded by many WA businesses, providing a broad range of business advisory services including succession planning, family business advice, strategic planning consulting and management advice. Colin is also the Independent Chair of ReddiFund Ltd, Mates in Construction (WA) Ltd and Senses Australia. He is also a Director of Nolan UDA Pty Ltd. Colin holds a Bachelor of Business and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia. Michael Harper Director (Non-Executive) - Michael Harper is the Director of Michael Harper & Associates. Michael provides consulting services to the civil Engineering and construction sectors providing advice on company structures, business strategy, bid management and construction methodologies. He has delivered numerous large-scale infrastructure projects in a career spanning more than 30 years. Before starting his own business in 2015, Michael was General Manager of Lend Lease’s Engineering business in Victoria and South Australia and prior to this held senior management roles across Australia and worked on several major projects overseas. Frank O'Grady Director (Non-Executive) - Frank O’Grady is a Director of Cbus and a member of the Cbus Audit and Risk Committee. Frank represents the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) Construction & General Division – Australia’s largest construction union. Prior to 2018, Frank was the Assistant National Secretary and before that, was an organiser and Vice President for the Victorian Branch of the CFMEU Construction & General Division. In 2014, Frank was appointed a Director of MATES in Construction. Professor Tony LaMontagne Academic Director (Non-Executive) and Chair of MATES Academic Research Reference Group - Professor Tony LaMontagne leads the Determinants of Health research domain in the Institute for Health Transformation at Deakin University. His broad research interest is in developing the scientific and public understanding of work as a social determinant of health, and translating this research into policy and practice to improve workplace and worker health. Specific areas of interest include workplace mental health, improving job quality and psychosocial working conditions, and evaluating government policy interventions. Intervention research studies have included process and effectiveness studies, quantitative and qualitative methods, and study designs ranging from case studies to large-scale cluster randomized controlled trials. His research and 250+ publications have influenced policy & practice in workplace health from the local to the international level. Dr Jacinta Hawgood Director (Non-Executive) - Dr Hawgood (BSSc, BPsy(Hons), MClinPsy (MAPS, MCCLP)) is a Senior Lecturer, and Program Director of Suicidology for the Graduate Certificate in Suicidology and Master of Suicidology Programs, which she jointly developed with Professor Diego De Leo in 2001. She has developed, delivered and evaluated suicide prevention training since 2000. Ms Hawgood has specialist clinical and research interest in the impacts of client and co-worker suicide on the worker, suicide risk assessment processes, training evaluation and personal suicide stigma and its impacts on suicidality. Jacinta has worked clinically with suicidal people for over 20 years and has supervised other psychologists in this domain since 2005. She is the lead author of Systematic Tailored Assessment for Responding to Suicidality (STARS) protocol published first in 2015 and updated in 2018. She has provided expert advice and guidance on suicide risk assessment and prevention to a range of State, Commonwealth and local government and non-government organisations. Ms Hawgood has worked on numerous research projects and consultancies, and has presented research findings at a range of state, national and international conferences. She has co-authored and edited a book, book chapters, and published numerous peer-reviewed articles and government reports in the field. David Mier Director (Non-Executive) - Dave did his electrical apprenticeship at the Port of Melbourne starting in 1980. For over 40 years he has championed the rights of electrical workers and been a stalwart of the union movement. For 14 years Dave was an organiser with the Victorian ETU and is currently the Assistant National Secretary of the Electrical Trades Union. Dan Ashby DAN ASHBY - Icon NZ Director Dan is a Director of Icon New Zealand. Trained in structural engineering, Dan has led multiple large-scale construction projects and businesses in New Zealand and internationally, including the project delivery team on the iconic 60 storey, 7-star Burj al Arab Hotel in Dubai. Before establishing Icon in New Zealand, Dan’s previous business leadership roles included being NZ Regional Managing Director for Multiplex Constructions, and Executive General Manager of Hawkins Construction. Throughout his career Dan has been passionate about building and the people who are the foundation of our industry. Construction is an exciting, but very demanding industry and Dan sees MATES as a key initiative in enhancing the wellbeing of our people "on the ground". He was on the establishment committee for MATES in NZ, a member of the inaugural Board and appointed as Chair in 2021. Chris Lockwood National CEO - Chris Lockwood has served as a director of Permanent Care and Adoptive Families (Inc.) since 2010, serving as Chair from 2012 to 2018, and as Secretary currently. Chris is a Director on the Board of Suicide Prevention Australia. Chris took on the role of CEO MATES in Construction (Aust.) in 2017, delivering the management and strategic direction for the company nationally. Prior to leading MATES, Chris worked for Cbus for 10 years managing strategic relationships with industry partner organisations (Unions, Employer Associations and other industry stakeholders) across the construction industry nationally. As well as managing the development and implementation of the fund’s member health strategy and initiatives aimed at reducing the incidence of suicide in the construction and allied industries. Chris has a BA (Psychology), BSc. and is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
