MTR Australia
Having over 50,000 employees globally, MTR has been participating in the rail industry in Australia through providing consultancy services since 2006. MTR established its first rail franchise business in Australia in 2009 when it partnered with John Holland Group and UGL Rail to take up the operations and maintenance franchise of the Melbourne’s metropolitan train network, before extending its operations to Sydney.
The Northwest Rapid Transit (NRT)# Consortium which MTR is a member was awarded the Operations, Trains and Systems Public-Private Partnership contract for the Sydney Metro Northwest (SMNW) project. The contract covered major parts of the design, construction and financing of the SMNW, as well as the operation and maintenance of the line. In 2019, the NRT Consortium was awarded an extension of the contract by the New South Wales Government to operate and maintain the future Sydney Metro City and Southwest (SMCSW) section. MTR will invest in the project and take the lead in the project works and railway operations of both the City and Southwest and the Metro Northwest Line as a combined single line for a 10-year period starting from 2024.
