MATES SA's Annual Fundraising Lunch Success

This year’s MATES SA’s Annual Fundraising Lunch held at the iconic Adelaide Oval was a fantastic afternoon and saw the biggest turnout yet. Around 350 people joined together to show their support of the MATES program and to celebrate the amazing work that’s being done by volunteers across our industries to support each other, raise awareness, and reduce suicide.

The Premier of South Australia, the Hon. Peter Malinauskas, opened the event and spoke about his government’s vision to support mental health in the state. The Premier recognised the work being done by MATES in Construction and announced the allocation of ongoing funding over the coming four years.

The new Opposition Leader, David Speirs MP, also attended the lunch, demonstrating the support MATES in Construction SA has from both sides of the political spectrum.keynote speaker this year was comedian Fiona O’Loughlin. With an award-winning career of over 20 years, Fiona has performed to packed houses across the world and appeared in popular TV shows such as ‘I’m a Celebrity Get me Out of Here’, ‘Hughesy We Have A Problem’, ‘Sunrise’, ‘Good News Week’, ‘Spicks and Specks’, and ‘Celebrity Apprentice’. Fiona candidly told the story of her very public battle with alcoholism and recent diagnosis of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, and the role her mates played in supporting her on this journey.

The event was supported by sponsors including Construction Industry Training Centre (CITC), Peer, and Walbridge Gilbert Aztec, and the major event sponsor Cbus: Australia’s largest super fund for the building, construction, and allied industries. Cbus has proudly supported MATES SA’s Annual fundraising Lunch for the past seven years.

The fundraising focus of this year’s event was to raise funds to help deliver the MATES in Construction Life Skills Toolbox program to more young apprentices across the construction and allied industries. Thanks to the support of the event sponsors and the generosity of so many individuals and companies on the day, the event raised just over $43,000.

Overall, it was a fantastic event that brought people together, raised funds to support the MATES program, and celebrated the ongoing work of so many amazing people in our industries.
